Traditional forms.
Practical understanding.
Purposeful growth.

The Delta Kai Style brings kata, practical application, earned progression, character, and leadership together in one continuing system. Students learn the form, explore its principles, and grow into deeper understanding over time.

One continuing system

What makes it
the Delta Kai Style?

Delta Kai is a distinct curriculum shaped by founder Thomas Draeger’s combined martial-arts experience. It is not presented as Shurite—or as any single inherited style. Each part supports the next stage of personal and technical growth.

01

Kata

Traditional forms provide the central tools through which the Delta Kai Style is organized, practiced, and passed on.

02

Practical understanding

From white belt, students connect movement to partner work, practical control, useful principles, and responsible decision-making.

03

Earned progression

Advancement reflects demonstrated growth in technical ability, application, values, behavior, and readiness.

04

Leadership

Deeper skill brings greater responsibility to help others and contribute to the future of the system.

Kata at the center

Two kata families.
One continuing study.

The Pinan and Naihanchi kata provide the central framework for studying movement and practical application at Delta Kai. Their principles can be explored in different ways as students develop understanding.

Pinan

Movement and distance

The Pinan kata emphasize movement, distance management, angles, positioning, and adaptable responses.

Naihanchi

Structure at close range

The Naihanchi kata emphasize close-range movement, structure, balance, and control when space is limited.

Kata offers a framework for continued study. Delta Kai presents practical possibilities without claiming that one interpretation is the only answer.

From form to understanding

Kata is a starting point—not the finish line.

Students first build dependable movement. Partner practice then helps them explore how those movements, principles, and decisions relate to another person.

Shu–Ha–Ri

Shu–Ha–Ri describes how students grow from following a foundation, to exploring it, and eventually developing deeper understanding. Its well-known expression is commonly associated with the Japanese tea tradition and tea master Sen no Rikyū.
